Nikka – Masataka Taketsuru, a descendant of a distinguished sake brewery in Hiroshima in 1918 went to Glasgow to study at university the distillation process and making whiskey. He did an internship at Longmorn and Hazelburn. In 1920 he returned to Japan with a Scottish wife. He felt that a whiskey distillery in the cool northern Japan had to stand and he preferred the more peated whiskeys. On the northern island of Hokkaido to the place Yoichi he found everything he needed to produce whiskey under his own philosophy: peat, barley, a cool climate, and plenty of clean water. Also, the environment similar to that of Scotland. The Yoichi distillery began in 1934 with the production of whiskey and Taketsuru changed the name of his company Nikka.
